Sergio Palleroni is an architect, co-founder and Director of the BaSiC Initiative, and a Professor and Fellow of the new Center for Sustainable Processes and Practices at Portland State University. He has been a Professor at the University of Texas, Austin and University of Washington, where in 1995 he co-founded the BaSiC Initiative with Professor David Riley to support the service learning work they had been doing with students since the late 1980s in Mexico and Central America. Sergio earned his professional BArch from the University of Oregon and his MSArchS in History Theory & Criticism from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has worked on housing and community development in the developing world since the 1970’s, both for not-for-profit, governmental, and international development and relief agencies such as the United Nations and the World Bank, as well as the governments of Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Nicaragua, India, and Taiwan.

Margarette Leite is a licensed architect and Assistant Professor at Portland State University. Her role brings practical experience, years as a metal artisan, and a hands-on focus on the tectonic properties of materials, construction detailing and building assembly. She holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Science from the College of William & Mary. As a Fulbright Scholar, she studied the influence of Siza and other Portuguese architects on the historic urban fabric. She sees adaptive reuse of the existing built environment as the most critical avenue for a responsible sustainability.

Allison Hu is a project designer and coordinator with PLDP with four years of experience in architecture firms and independent design commissions focusing on non-profits and the creative community. She holds a professional Bachelor of Architecture with Honors from the University of Texas at Austin, where she was a Mebane Travel Scholar in adaptive reuse and earned numerous school-wide and regional honors for her design work. Her point of view is informed by a background in sculpture and painting.
