The Angel Lane Community Center design was commissioned by Oprah Winfrey’s Angel Network to serve a group of 60 homes built to house refugees from Hurricane Katrina. The Angel Lane community was built on 6.5 acres in Houston, Texas. The community center was designed through a community participatory design process to provide both indoor and outdoor gathering spaces, and education and job support spaces, childcare, a playground and community gardens, all surrounded by a 3-mile parcourse. Its structure was created from decommissioned oil pipe and its unique roof form was designed to capture and store rainwater for gardening. The commercial kitchen was designed to support community gatherings as well as small food business start-ups.
